 Title unknown (The Tale of the Soga Brothers)

解説かいせつ

 Isoda Koryusai 1772-1780 This elongated print is called “hashira-e (pillar picture)”, and it was produced for the purpose of displaying on a pillar of the house. The depicted figures are the Soga brothers, the characters of the famous revenge story of kabuki drama “The Tale of the Soga Brothers”. The big brother Soga no Juro Sukenari and the younger brother Soga no Goro Tokimune are dynamically expressed as figures that extend beyond the frame of the picture. The figure depicted at the top is Juro and at the bottom is Goro.
