Kitagawa Utamaro Production date:1798-1800 This work is from the series of twelve works that illustrated women engaged in “sericulture industry”. Sericulture is the production of silk and people produced silk thread by reeling the filaments unbound from the cocoons. Since the main print color is purple, this type of work was called as “murasaki-e (the purple color picture)”. In this picture, the process to select and to classify the skein of silk, which was reeled from cocoons, based on its whiteness and quality is illustrated. |
