Author: Jippensha Ikku 1802 (Kyouwa 2) This was a comical novel published during 1802 to 1814 (Kyouwa 2-Bunka 11). “Hiza (Knee)-kurige (brown hair)” indicates brown horse’s knees. Here, the journey by walk is suggested through the analogue of the brown horse’s knees with human’s knees. Combining the names of two main characters Yajirobei and Kitahachi, this story is known as “Yaji-Kita”. It was a most well known comical story during Edo period and the story descended even today in the various entertainment media. In this work, there are many illustrations by the author and they tell us the diverse subjects of Edo period journey along the Toukaidou Highway. |
