Artist: Kubo Shunman c.1809 (c.Bunka 6), No publisher’s seal This is surimono or the privately issued print. Surimono was produced by kyouka poets or haikai poets as the special providing products for the guests of the New Year party. In this work, the typical characteristics of surimono, the elaborated use of color, and the exquisite emboss patterns are identified. The wave, the passage, the beach and the ridgeline of Mt. Fuji are expressed with emboss effect, and gold and silver are applied on the patterns of women’s obi belts. At the upper part of the picture, the kyouka poems are written. Kubo Shunman Hōreki 7~Bunsei 3 (1757~1820) Shunman studied under Katori Nahiko and later became a pupil of Kitao Shigemasa. His style was greatly influenced by Torii Kiyonaga. He was active as an ukiyo-e artist from the mid An’ei era to the Tenmei era (1772-1789), produced many pictures of beautiful women and especially paintings. He preferred not use colorful color such as beni (pale crimson) and the style constrained to use vivid colors “beni-girai” were often seen in his works. He was a virtuoso and involved in wide variety of works such as producing illustrations for kyōka-surimono (privately published book about satirical poems), and hanpon (books printed by woodblocks). |
