Picture of the Seven Deities of Good Luck on the Bort

解説かいせつ

Kitagawa Utamaro 1845-55 This work is a picture in which women playing on a boat are depicted as the Seven Gods of Good Fortune. It belongs to a genre of picture known as mitate-e, a work in which classical subjects are replaced with the customs and manners of the Edo period (1603-1868). Although there are nine people on the screen, seven beautiful women and young men, excluding two children, are depicted as the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, along with various auspicious objects. The artist's signature reads “Utamaro Kakizome,” which suggests that this is a picture for the New Year, a time of celebration.
