Jippensya ikku 1798 The author, Jippensha Ikku, was a representative playwright of the late Edo period and is said to have been the first in Japan to live solely on his writing, thanks to the success of his Tokaido Hizakurige (Shank’s Mare: Tour of the Tokaido Highway) series. As in this work, he also created his own drawings for his early works. This work is a Kibyoushi (a simple reading material mainly consisting of pictures form the Edo period) that tells the comical story set in Enoshima Island.
