Uki-e Soshu Enoshima no Zu (Illustration of Enoshima, Soshu)

解説かいせつ

Katsukawa Shunko 1804-17 Katsukawa Shunko (date of birth and death unknown) is an Ukiyo-e artist who is said to have been a student of Katsukawa Shunsho or Katsukawa Shun'ei I.Landscape paintings, portraits of actors, and genre paintings can be seen from the Kansei to Bunka periods. Uki-e, which is included in the title, is a painting that emphasizes depth of perspective, and it became the basis of nishiki-e landscape painting by making the expression of perspective more accurate than in the past. In this painting, the sunrise and Mt. Fuji are painted, an auspicious sign typical of early Enoshima Ukiyo-e. Many people coming to Enoshima to worship are walking on the sandbars that connect Enoshima and Katase Coast. Several thatched huts can be seen on Katase Beach in the foreground, with people resting inside.
