“Yorinobu Tadatsune, Flooding Attack on Oji Castle”

解説かいせつ

Utagawa Sadahide 1844-1853 On June 5, 1028, Taira no Tadatsune attacked the capital of Awa Province and killed the provincial governor. This incident is often called the Taira no Tadatsune Rebellion. The Taira clan wielded great power in the Kanto region at the end of the Heian Period, and this was a large-scale rebellion against the governors the central government had dispatched. According to the text on the print, Minamoto no Yorinobu, sent as a military official, captured the castle by flooding it. With this victory, many members of the Taira clan in the Kanto region fell under Yorinobu’s control, which gave the Minamoto clan an opportunity to expand its influence in the eastern part of Japan.
