Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway (Picture Album of Later Reprints)

解説かいせつ

Shank’s Mare Tour of the Toukaidou Highway, published by the Nosatsu Bunka Hozonkai (a society dedicated to the preservation of votive card culture; original edition, Utagawa Yoshikazu), published on October 3, 1959 This is a collection of votive cards and ukiyo-e that was published upon preparation at the fiscal 1959 meeting of the aforementioned society. The ukiyo-e are a new edition of The Comical Ukiyo-e Works of the Toukaidou Highway series by Utagawa Yoshikazu. The society met once every two months, and concerned itself with Shank’s Mare Tour of the Toukaidou Highway in two meetings. The reissue of this material may have derived from a preference for a witty style. Many of the society's members were involved with performing arts dating from the Edo period. The votive cards contain the names of prominent persons including Tachibana Ukon, an authority on Edo scripts; the vaudeville entertainer Shinjuku Suehirotei; storyteller Ichiryu Saiteijo; comic storytellers Sanyutei Enba, Sanyutei Hyakusho, and Yanagiya Kosan; magicians Adachi Ryuko and Ryutei Chiraku; and comedians Miyakoya Katsue and Katsura Edataro.
