The detail map of Yokohama

解説かいせつ

Utagawa Yoshikazu 1858 This is a map of Yokohama around the time of the opening of its port in 1858. Sailing ships from various Western countries are painted in the harbor. The wharf facing the battery in the lower-middle part of the picture is the present-day “elephant nose” pier. Yoshikazu was one of the major artists in the genre of Yokohama-e, which experienced a wave of popularity toward the end of the Edo period. He also produced works that adopted a bird's eye view, like this one.
