Ippitusai Bunchou 1764-1770 The characters from one of the most popular kabuki plays of the Edo period (1603-1868) “Kana-dehon Chushingura (The Revenge of the Forty-seven Ronin)”, Hayano Kanpei and his lover Okaru, are depicted. When Kanpei’s master was ordered to commit seppuku, or ritual suicide for assaulting his colleague, Kampei could not rush to his master’s side since he was meeting his lover Okaru. Due to his overwhelming and heavy feelings of guilt, Kanpei decides to escape with Okaru. |
