 Narumi, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaidou”

解説かいせつ

 Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1854 The production of Arimatsu shibori (tie-and-indigo-dyed) took place at Arimatsu Village located east side of Narumi post station and these products were sold at the shops along the Highway. Travelers are attracted by the various kimonos displayed at the shop-front. The hill illustrated in the right foreground is covering some of the street with the stores drawn in perspective to give an expression of depicted.
