 Nissaka, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaidou”

解説かいせつ

 Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1854 Along the Toukaidou Highway, there was a famous stone called “yonaki-ishi (a stone that weeps at night)” at the slope of Nakayama Mountain Pass of Sayo, which was located at the east side of Nissaka post station. In this picture, few travelers stop by to watch the stone. According to a legend, the spirit of a mother, who was killed by a bandit, transferred into this stone and weeps every night.
