Kanagawa, from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido(Travel along the Toukaidou with Kyouka Poems)

解説かいせつ

Utagawa Hiroshige 1840 Beyond a humble tea stand, which was located at the outskirt of Kanagawa-dai observatory, the wide Kanagawa-oki Ocean extends. Across the ocean, Noge and Honmoku are depicted on the right. The size of sailboats gradually became smaller as they move toward offshore, and a vast expanse of ocean is suggested beyond the horizon. Since people can enjoy the ocean view from the top of the Kanagawa-dai, this place became very popular and clouded with many people. On the contrary, a serene scenery is depicted in this picture.
