Kisegawa, between Mishima and Numazu: Kisegawa, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway”

解説かいせつ

The river illustrated on the background of the figure is Kisegawa River, which flows between Numazu post station and Mishima post station. During the Kamakura period, a very famous courtesan called Kametsuru lived around this place. She was very popular that she was even invited to the banquet hosted by the high rank official Kudou Suketsune, who was the enemy of Soga brothers. Since a courtesan called Kisegawa Kametsuru appears as a character of a kabuki play “The Felicitous Soga Encounter”, this river is related to this story.
