 Kewaizaka,between Hiratsuka and Ōiso: Oniō, from the series“Tōkaidō”

解説かいせつ

 Oniou is a character from a kabuki play “The Felicitous Soga Encounter”, a revenge story of the Soga Brothers and he is the loyal vassal of Soga Brothers. Picture is the realistic portraiture of a kabuki actor Seki Sanjurou II but this print was published after Seki was passed away. The slope depicted on the background is Kewai-zaka and this place is related to the play since “Kesho-ido (a well)”, a place related to Jurou’s lover Tora-gozen, was located around this slope.
