解説かいせつ

Utagawa Kuniyoshi Production date:1845 This warrior picture series illustrated the anecdotes of Japanese worriers. Yoshitsune and Benkei were illustrated in the facing page. The brief biography and distinguished military exploits are described in the captions inserted above the figures. Sign board illustrated in the middle, with the notice "Anyone cutting a branch from this tree must have a finger cut off” was erected by Benkei. This is “The Ban about the Wakagi no Sakura” erected in front of the “wakagi no sakura (the young cherry tree)” that was said to be planted by Hikaru no Genji, the main character of “The Tale of Genji”. This story became famous after the joruri play “Ichi-no-tani Futaba Gunki” included this episode.
