Production date: 1853 (Kaei 6) This picture was a kawara-ban, it is like newspaper of the time and it was published after the Sagami Province Earthquake took place in 1853 (Kaei 6) with the epicentre of Odawara. From the good condition of the print, it was not published right after the incident, with lower quality in haste. Rather, it was produced carefully, quite some time after the incident. In the paper, information of the damage states by the great fire and the tsunami is written down. Furthermore, the picture realistically depicts the people in panic caused by the incident and vividly illustrates the critical scenes such as people desperately escaped from the torn down houses and flustered by the cracks on ground while standing on the board on the ground. |
