Five Clothes Dyed into Five Different Colors blue

解説かいせつ

Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) Production date: 1851 (Kaei 4) According to the Theory of Ying-Yang and the Five Elements, “yellow”, “blue”, “red”, “white” and “black” were considered as the important colors and in this picture, the five colors are assorted with five different beauties. These beauties are based on the characters of kabuki plays, and the colors of the kimono that the beauties wear correspond to the colors of five elements. The beauty illustrated in the “blue” picture is Princess Terute, from the story of Oguri Hangan. Oguri Hangan was a character who had a connection with Yugyouji Temple of Fujisawa, and Princess Terute is Oguri’s lover. In this picture, Terute brings Oguri Hangan, who turns into a zombie, to a hot spring of Kuano by pulling a cart that Oguri rides. The printed color looks like green but this color is also considered as “blue” in the Edo period.
