解説かいせつ

Utagawa Sadatora The production date:1839 Glorious line-up of women with the various manners are illustrated. A woman illustrated at the left might be a daughter from a wealthy merchant family. A courtesan and a diver are also illustrated. At the right side, a woman riding on an ox and a lady wrapping her head with a towel are sharing a light with a chic gesture of transferring a fire directly to the pipe. As this woman, the wearing towel in a special way was called “ane-san kaburi”, and this towel protected hair from sea breeze. This was a real custom of the women pilgrims who visited the Enoshima Shrine and often illustrated in the ukiyo-e pictures.
