Between Fujisawa and Hiratsuka, Yotsuya Yamagaeri, from the series“Tōkaidō”

解説かいせつ

The kabuki dance image “Yamagaeri” is illustrated where Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII carries the matoi battle banner made from the famous Ōmori straws. “Yamagaeri” means “return from the pilgrimage path to Mount Ōyama,” and many ukiyo-e works on the occasion of the pilgrimage to Mount Ōyama illustrate figures carrying matoi. Yotsuya, located between Fujisawa Station and Hiratsuka Station, thrived as a crossroads branching to the Tōkaidō Highway and the highway to Ōyama. Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII is the eldest son of Ichikawa Danjūrō VII. He was a tremendously popular actor as the legendary heartthrob because of his good performance in portraying handsome characters with elegance and tenderness, unlike other generations of Danjūrō.
