The Pictures of Comical Shank’s Mare Tour of the Fifty-three Stations (Sugoroku)

解説かいせつ

Artist: Ichiensai (Utagawa) Kunimasu Publisher: Osaka, Wataya Kihei c.1830-1854 (c.Tempou-Kaei era) Various motifs were used to illustrate the sugoroku board games of the Journey of the Toukaidou Highway, but once the “Toukai-douchu Hiza-kurige (Shank’s Mare Tour of the Toukaidou Highway)” became enormously popular among the people, many sugoroku games were produced based on this story. This sugoroku is one of them thus there are many devices and episodes that connect the story with the sugoroku game. The scene illustrated in each section is from the scene of “Hiza-kurige” and the starting point (Usually the regular starting point of sugoroku is the Nihonbashi Bridge, the starting point of the Toukaidou Highway) is switched to the Kanda Haccho-bori, where the main character of the story lives.
