解説かいせつ

Utagawa Sadahide (Gyokuransai) The production date: 1865 (Keiou 1) The event of the Fourteenth Shougun Tokugawa Iemochi’s procession from Tokyo to Kyoto was one of the popular themes for ukiyo-e print, and various series of the Fifty-three stations of the Toukaidou Highway that related to this event were published. These works were called “Gojouraku Toukaidou (Samurai’s procession along the Toukaidou Highway)” or “Gyouretsu Toukaidou” (lit. Processional Toukaidou) and became a major hit. As a consequence, many editions were published. This popularity shows people’s high interest to the political issues at the end of the Edo period. Sadahide was known for his premier bird’s-eye view expression and this work also demonstrates his talent.
