Ohtanimura between Ohtsu and Kyou: Kan-Shoujou, from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido

解説かいせつ

Kan Shōjō from Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami (Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy), is based on the historical figure Sugawara no Michizane, a politician from the Heian period who passed away in exile after being banished from the capital due to accusations made by his political rival. In the play, Kan Shōjō is an intelligent and respected politician. However, he is exiled when a scandal of his adoptive daughter Kariya-hime being involved in a romantic relationship with Prince Tokiyo, the younger brother of the emperor, is used against him by his political rival Fujiwara no Shihei. The actor portraying Kan Shōjō in this print is Bandō Hikosaburō III and the scenery depicted in the background is that of Ōtani-mura (Ōtani Village), a village located between Kyoto and Ōtsu post station.
