解説かいせつ

 Date no Yosaku, like Seki no Koman (No.40), is a character from the kabuki play Koinyōbō Somewake Tazuna. At the time of publication, the actor portraying Yosaku, Sawamura Sōjurō III had passed away. Yosaku was a retainer of the daimyō Yurugi clan. But when his love affair with the female servant Shigenoi is exposed by the antagonist Washizuka Kandayū, Yosaku is expelled from the Yurugi clan and becomes a umakata, a laborer in charge of leading horses carrying luggage or people. However, at the end of the play, he defeats Kandayū and is able to return as a retainer of the Yurugi clan.
