Kameyama: Fujikawa Mizuemon, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway”

解説かいせつ

Artist: Utagawa Toyokuni III (Kunisada) 1852 (Kaei 5) In both of Kameyama and Kameyama no.2, the characters from “The Revenge of Kameyama” are illustrated. In Kameyama, Matsumoto Koushirou V, who takes a part of Fujikawa Mizuemon and in Kameyama no.2, Ichikawa Uzaemon XII takes part of Ishii Heisuke are illustrated as if the two figures are facing each other. These works are part of the series “Actors Assorted in Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou”. Right now 140 works of this series are found. The artist Toyokuni III was one of the most popular ukiyo-e artists. The landscape of the post station is illustrated at the background, and a figure in front is a character of kabuki play who has a connection to the post station. Also, all figures’ portraits are based on the famous kabuki actors. In both of Kameyama: Fujikawa Mizuemon, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway”and Second of Kameyama Post Station Ⅱ: Ishii Heisuke, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway”, the characters from “The Revenge of Kameyama” are illustrated. In 「Fujikawa Mizuemon」Matsumoto Koushirou V, who takes a part of Fujikawa Mizuemon and in 「Ishii Heisuke」, Ichimura Uzaemon XII takes part of Ishii Heisuke are illustrated as if the two figures are facing each other. At the right upper part of the picture, the Kameyama Castle on the soaring stone wall is illustrated as a background.
