Artist: Utagawa Toyokuni III (Kunisada) 1852 (Kaei 5) A figure with a humorous facial expression is Sawai Sukehei, one of the characters from a revenge story “The Sugoroku Game of Crossing Iga”. Sukehei is an express messenger and a subject of Sawai Matagorou, the antagonist of the main character. In this scene, Sukehei gets mad with jealousy because he just saw his favorite female entertainer from the Yoshida juku (inn) is flirting with a man. He saw them by using a telescope at a tea house. The kabuki actor who took part of Sukehei was Bandou Mitsuemon I and his forte was the comical clown. These works are part of the series “Actors Assorted in Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou”. Right now 140 works of this series are found. The artist Toyokuni III was one of the most popular ukiyo-e artists. The landscape of the post station is illustrated at the background, and a figure in front is a character of kabuki play who has a connection to the post station.
