Hakone:Hatsuhana, from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido

解説かいせつ

In its background, No. 6 depicts the Sakawa River at night while the foreground depicts Iinuma Katsugorō, the hero of Hakone Reigen Izari no Adauchi. No. 7 depicts Hatsuhana, Katsugorō's wife. Morita Kanya XI is shown as Katsugorō and Iwai Hanshirō VI as Hatsuhana. This is a posthumous portrait of Hanshirō. Katsugorō sets out with Hatsuhana on a journey of revenge, but disease consumes him and he loses the ability to use his legs. Hatsuhana is captured by their adversary, Takiguchi Kōzuke, at Amida Temple in Hakone, and is executed. She returns to Katsugorō’s side as a ghost. Within this print, Hatsuhana is depicted as a ghost praying as a waterfall thunders down around her. Hatsuhana's wish for Katsugorō to be healed is granted and he avenges his loved ones.
