Minamoto-no-Yoritomo’s “Great Hunt” was recorded in Azuma-Kagami, a historical text from the Kamakura period. The event called a makigari or large-scale hunting expedition was not just a hunt for pleasure, but to display the power and status of Yoritomo as a great general. The hunting tactics practiced and performed were also related to military maneuvers. In this print designed by Utagawa Kunihisa, Nitta-no-Shirō Tadatsune hunting a boar is especially emphasized. The depiction of his valiant prowess as a hunter, alludes to his “brave” character and to his future exploration of the hitoana caves and tunnels at Mt. Fuji as depicted in No.XX.
