Shono: Nakano Toube, from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido

解説かいせつ

The background of this print is a recreation of the iconic rain scene in Utagawa Hiroshige’s Shōno from his Hoeido edition of the“Tōkaidō” series. The figure in the foreground is Bandō Takesaburō I, who plays Nakano Tōbei within the Kameyama no Adauchi genre of kabuki plays. The stories related to the Kameyama no Adauchi genre is based on true events that took place at Ise Kameyama in 1701 involving a revenge incident. The events were soon thereafter turned into a play in 1702. Nakano Tōbei first appears as a character within the Kameyama revenge lore in Dōchū Kameyama-banashi (1778). He is killed by Fujikawa Mizuemon (No. 81) when he attempts to avenge the death of his lord, Ishii Hyōei.
