Nihonbashi:Katsuo-uri, from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido

解説かいせつ

Bandō Mitsugorō III is depicted as a bonito vendor, with Nihonbashi Bridge in the background. Nihonbashi, the starting point of the Tōkaidō Highway, was known for their fish market where hatsu-katsuo (the first bonito of the season) was sold. This fish was a popular early summer delicacy in Edo. This print depicts Bandō Mitsugorō III in the dance piece titled “Katsuo-uri (bonito seller),” accompanied by a Tomimoto-bushi song, representing the month of April within the play Shiki no Nagame Yosete Mitsudai. Shiki no Nagame Yosete Mitsudai is a play that has twelve dances representing the twelve months of the year. It was first performed at the Nakamura-za theater in 1813. This is a posthumous portrait of Bandō Mitsugorō III as the bonito vendor.
