Yaji and Kita take a passenger boat from Maisaka to Lake Hamana. A man on the boat searches Yaji’s sleeves, surprising him. The man calms Yaji, saying that he is looking for his lost item, which turns out to be a snake, causing uproar on the boat. Kita tells the man, who is trying to make a living using a snake, to throw it into the sea. To tease Kita, the man acts as if he is throwing it into the sea, staggers, and brings it close to Kita. Kita shouts, “Don’t jump the gun, I can’t stand the snake!” In Maisaka-shuku, the Tōkaidō’s land route was interrupted, and travelers had to cross about 1.5 li
