Kita gave a dango dumpling to a dog, but the dog ate all, and everyone from the teahouse lady to palanquin carriers is laughing at it. The signboard on the top left of the painting says “Yasumidokoro Nakayado Akitaya” which suggests that they are taking a break on their journey. Between Fujisawa-shuku and Hiratsuka-shuku, there were rest places for palanquin carriers and horses, called tateba. Those with particularly scenic views were used as rest spots for travelers and called tatebajaya teahouses.
