Revised Famous Views Along the Tōkai No.28: Sayo-no-Nakayama Pass, Nissaka

作者さくしゃ

Utagawa Hiroshige III

解説かいせつ

Sayo-no-Nakayama, a pass on the way from Kanaya to Nissaka, is known as a difficult spot of the Tōkaidō where steep slopes extend. In front of the tea house, travelers are surrounding and looking at the stone that is said to cry at night, famous for its legend of a murdered pregnant woman. Among travelers who still dress the same as in the Edo period, a man in Western clothes going up the slope is illustrated subtly.
