Utagawa Hiroshige III 1875 (Meiji 8) The scenery of a ferryboat crossing Banyu River is illustrated in this picture. Banyu River is the name of downstream of the Sagami River. Until 1878, when Mokugeta-kyou Bridge was first build, the ferryboat was used by the travelers who cross this river as it was in the Edo period. This place was known for its great scenic view since Mt. Fuji and Mt. Oyama are viewed at the same time and the scenery often illustrated in ukiyo-e works from the time of Hiroshige I. In a first glance, the traditional houses with the straw roofs and the people wearing kimono looked almost the same as a regular scene of the Edo period, but the two-wheeled passenger cart on the ferryboat and a western umbrella that a man who just missed a ferryboat holds describe the influence of the modern culture. |
