Utagawa HiroshigeⅢ The production date:1875 The people passing through the first Torii gate and illustrated in front are the pilgrims heading to Enoshima Island. In the middle, Yugyouji Bridge is illustrated and Yugyouji Temple is illustrated in a distance at the right back. Hiroshige I also illustrated the same scenery, but the Yugyouji Bridge, which was an arch-shape bridge at the time of Hiroshige I was reconstructed into a flat bridge, since it needed the stress improvement for two wheeled passenger carts and carriages passing on the bridge. The western style window flame is illustrated at the teahouse located by the bridge and the hints of the influences of modernization can be seen everywhere in this picture. A man riding a horse looks like a westerner. At the time, foreigners who stayed at the foreign settlement of Yokohama were restricted to travel around and permitted to travel only about 40 km from the settlement. Fujisawa station was located within the permitted distance, therefore there might be a chance that foreign travelers actually visit Fujisawa as illustrated. |
