Utagawa HiroshigeⅢ The production date: 1875 (Meiji 8) The transition of cityscape of Nihonbashi to the modern Meiji period is illustrated in this picture. Although the most of the people illustrated in the picture wear the traditional kimono, the cityscape with western buildings, gaslights, utility pole, two wheeled passenger carts and a carriage are clearly different from the Edo period landscape. The bridge was divided into two sections: one section is for wheeled carts or carriages and the other is for pedestrians. The closest building to the bridge is the Telegraph Office. In 1869 (Meiji 2), the telegraph service between Yokohama Tsukiji started for the first time in Japan. By 1872 (Meiji 5), the service extended to Nihonbashi. |
