Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway Kambara: Iwabuchi

解説かいせつ

Artist: Utagawa Hiroshige II Production date: 1865 (Keio 1) Kambara: Iwabuchi “Iwabuchi” was ai-no-shuku, a rest spot located between Yoshiwara and Kambara post stations. Around here, there used to be koyasumi honjin or a rest spot ran by Tokiwa Family for the high rank Samurai and the name Iwabuchi still remains today. The river flows on the right is the Fuji River and ferry boats are illustrated. The artist seal of this series is “Ryushou-ga (Picture by Ryushou)” and Ryushou is the name of Utagawa Hiroshige II. After Hiroshige I died in 1859, his pupil Shigenobu succeeded Hiroshige’s name and became Hiroshige II. Later, he succeeded the Hirosige I’s style in his work but by 1865, he changed artist name as Ryushou. “Fifty-three Stations of Toukaidou” was published in the year he changed his name and the series consisted of 56 works.
