 Kanagawa: Yokohama, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Highway”

解説かいせつ

 Utagawa HiroshigeⅡ 1865 This print depicts the port of Yokohama that had opened in 1859 with a view of Kanagawa. There were only two routes to this port: the first by land using a side route called Yokohama-michi off of the Tōkaidō Highway between Kanagawa and Hodogaya post stations, and the second by sea from Kanagawa post station and its shores. This image illustrates the pier at Yokohama port.
