Utagawa Kunisada II and Utagawa Hiroshige II Production date: 1863 (Bunkyu 3) This series was known as “Jouraku Toukaidou (Samurai’s procession along the Toukaidou Highway)” since this work was published with the event of the Fourteenth Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi’s procession from Tokyo to Kyoto (Shogun’s official visit to Emperor) that took place in 1863 (Bunkyu 3). This is a collaborated work of Kunisada II (Toyokuni VI) and Hiroshige II. In the picture, the scene that Shogun is watching a woman diver and her child as they try to catch abalone from the bottom of sea. Since Iemochi never visited Enoshima Island, this scene is not based on the historical fact. The idea was taken from a historical figure Minamoto no Yoritomo, who was related to this region. From the upper part of the waves situating in the middle, Hiroshige II illustrated the scene of the land, and the other part, inside of the water was illustrated by Kunisada II. Kunisada II was good at illustrating figures and Hiroshige II was good at illustrating landscapes. In this picture, both of the artists took part in their strong genres and fully expressed their skills. |
