Hiratuska, from the series “Toukaidou”

解説かいせつ

Artist: Utagawa Hiroshige II Production date: 1863 (Bunkyu 3) The procession is passing by the ferry at Banyu River. The young worrier riding on the horse at the foreground looks like a Shogun of that time, but from the bamboo grass and gentians crest on the elongated flag at the center of the picture, it is suggested that he is the first military leader Minamoto-no Yoritomo. Since it is prohibited to illustrate the pictures related to Tokugawa Shogunate, artist related this scene with a historical figure and an event. The illustrated bridge never existed at the time of Tokugawa Iemochi’s procession from Tokyo to Kyoto. This image was based on the local legend that Yoritomo visited this place in the occasion of the completion ceremony of the bridge across the Sagami River, which was constructed during the Kamakura period.
