Miya, from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Toukaidou Highway”

解説かいせつ

Artist: Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) Production date: 1833 (Tempou 4) From the Miya post station, all the background pictures did not borrowed from the work of Hiroshige’s Hoeidou edition of the Toukaidou series except Yokkaichi post station. As for the reason for the change, scholars suggest that Kunisada’s series were produced prior to Hiroshige’s series. Although the background of this picture is borrowed from the work “Hama-Torii of Miya Station” from volume 3 of “Famous Places of the Toukaidou Highway”, published in 1797, the design of spreading sale of a sailing ship is Kunisada’s original. Miya post station is temple town located around Atsuta Shrine, and the torii gate illustrated on the left is Hama-Torii. A woman illustrated at the foreground holds a kagura-suzu (Bell that is used for Shinto Shrine’s music and dance performing ritual.) and she is dressed as a shrine maiden of Atsuta Shrine.
