Utagawa Kunisada(Utagawa Toyokuni Ⅲ) 1833 The background landscape is the same composition of “Nissaka, Sayo Mountain Pass” from Hiroshige’s Hoeidou edition of the Toukaidou series.This Nakayama mountain pass was also famous with the “yonaki-ishi (a stone that weeps at night)”. According to a legend, a mother’s soul who died at this place leaving her baby alone transferred into this stone and weeps every night. The yonaki-ishi is located in the middle of the road, and few travelers stop by at the stone. |
