Artist: Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) Production date: 1833 (Tempou 4) As “Morning Mist of Mishima” from Hiroshige’s Hoeidou edition Toukaidou series, the early morning scenery of misty Mishima post station is illustrated on the background. The silhouette of the First Torii Gate of Mishima Shrine is emerging from the mist and the scene of departure with the porters shouldering a customer on a palanquin and norikake (a porter with a horse who carries luggage and a man up to the weight of 75 kg) is illustrated. The foreground woman’s beautiful kimono and gorgeous hair accessories with the special omage hair style are the customs of high-rank samurai family’s daughter and she is the only person in the whole series who stands on the luxurious futon mattress. A stationary box decorated with raden (mother of pearl work) is put by her foot. In the box, documents are put in the middle layer and the turtle shape object is put on the top as if it faces to the woman. |
