Artist: Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) Production date: 1833 (Tempou 4) For the background scenery, Kunisada copied almost the same picture of Hiroshige’s Hoeidou edition’s “Shinagawa at Dawn” from the Toukaidou series, but in order to fully utilize the vertical picture, Kunisada illustrated the scenery from the bird’s eye angle. At the back, a procession of samurai is passing by the Nihonbashi Bridge, and the bouji-kui, which indicates the border of the post station is illustrated next to a low-rank samurai chugen shouldering a hasami-bako (luggage boxes with a pole). From the hair style of the woman, decorated with ornamental hairpins and combs, she is considered as a courtesan. Since Shinagawa post station was the closest post station from Edo region and Okabasho (a pleasure quarter, which is not authorized by Bakufu) was also located in this area, this station was flourished with many people. |
