歌川國貞（三代歌川豐國）/歌川廣重 1854 This picture illustrated “Chapter of Terute Pulls the Wheeled Cart”, a scene from a play of jyoururi puppet drama and kabuki play, based on the story of Oguri Hangan. Oguri supposed to be riding on the cart that Terute is pulling, but he was removed from this picture since sick figure might not be suitable for the selling ukiyo-e. The background pine forest that Hiroshige illustrated with exaggerated depth emphasizes the harsh and long path to Kumano Gongen Shrine, where Oguri has to pilgrimage for his rebirth. |
