解説かいせつ

Utagawa Hiroshige 1856 ‘Ishibe’, Dengaku, tofu with a sweet miso sauce: a local speciality, is illustrated. ‘Kusatsu’ illustrates placid Biwa-ko Lake. Kusatsu post station was flourished as the fork of two major highways, the Toukaidou Highway and Nakasendou Highway. ‘Otsu’ is famous for its speciality called ‘Otsu-e’. As souvenirs for travellers there were many shops that sold these pictures. The depicted motif is a demon: a commonly known subject matter of Otsu-e. ‘Kyo’ illustrates an ‘Oharame’ sitting showing her back. Oharame carried fire wood on her head for selling. This is a glimpse of her having a break. Hiroshige produced many series of prints based on the Toukaidou Highway, and he also produced the different styles of work as this one. It is generally called “The Toukaidou with Harimaze-e (Paste the mixed pictures.)”, and three to five pictures of landscapes of post stations, local specialties and episodes or stories related to the places are illustrated in a single sheet.
