Seki, Sakanoshita, Tsuchiyama, and Minakuchi from the series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Highway”

解説かいせつ

Utagawa Hiroshige 1856 ‘Seki’ illustrates the Priest Soujun, who is known as ‘Ikkyu-san’. There is a story that tells of when he visited the place, he consecrated and enshrined a newly made image of Jizo. ‘Sakanoshita’ illustrates a view of the Suzuka-gawa River. Because the Sakanoshita Post Station was next to the Suzuka-toge Peak, many people passed through. ‘Tsuchiyama’ illustrates a scene of Mount Suzuka-yama. The building on the right in the background is the Tsuchiyama Post Station. ‘Minakuchi’ illustrates ‘Oiko’, a Herculeanly powerful woman lifting up a huge stone. Hiroshige produced many series of prints based on the Toukaidou Highway, and he also produced the different styles of work as this one. It is generally called “The Toukaidou with Harimaze-e (Paste the mixed pictures.)”, and three to five pictures of landscapes of post stations, local specialties and episodes or stories related to the places are illustrated in a single sheet.
