Utagawa Hiroshige 1856 ‘Goyu’ illustrates Warlord Yamamoto Kansuke. Goyu is known as the Kansuke’s birthplace. ‘Akasaka’ illustrates autumn foliage and biwa, a Japanese lute. The biwa is attributed to the legend of the late Heian period: Fujiwara no Moronaga. ‘Okazaki’ illustrates Princess Joururi Hime performing the Koto, a Japanese harp. ‘Fujikawa’ illustrates the scenery of a landscape of a rest place, located at the east end of Fujikawa post station . Hiroshige produced many series of prints based on the Toukaidou Highway, and he also produced the different styles of work as this one. It is generally called “The Toukaidou with Harimaze-e (Paste the mixed pictures.)”, and three to five pictures of landscapes of post stations, local specialties and episodes or stories related to the places are illustrated in a single sheet. |
