Utagawa Hiroshige 1856 ‘Fuji-eda’ illustrates a scene from a tale ‘Toukaidouchu Hizakurige’ ―Shank’s Mare: The Tour of the Toukaidou Highway― when one of the main character Kita-san is carried on the back of a blind man to cross the river. ‘Shimada’ reminds us of a play where the Shimada Post Station becomes the location of a story told through the design of flowers of morning glory on a fan and the plectra of Koto, a kind of Japanese chordophone. ‘Kanaya’ is a picture viewing Mt. Fuji from above the Kanaya-zaka Slope on the right embankment of Oi-gawa River, the Kyoto side. Hiroshige produced many series of prints based on the Toukaidou Highway, and he also produced the different styles of work as this one. It is generally called “The Toukaidou with Harimaze-e (Paste the mixed pictures.)”, and three to five pictures of landscapes of post stations, local specialties and episodes or stories related to the places are illustrated in a single sheet. |
